The Idea of Controlling Change

Aspects of change both emotional and physical in our world and fear connected with it are analyzed in “The Door”. It is a short poem written by Miroslav Holub. Holub analyzes the idea of overcoming comfort zones to feel change. It is illusory simple, but successful in depicting this changed self through appealing to ones fear and getting beyond ones conventions. Holub efficaciously describes a dramatic monologue in which the responder is involved in the poem and directly impelled to “go and open the door”. The constant repetition of this phrase transfers the change in self-enforced by following a simple direction. However this direction is not frightening and the speaker maintains the role of a helping mediator. The way Holub applies this cajoling tone stresses the message of change by evoking the curiosities of the responder to act following their instincts. The soothing tone applied lessens any fear of doubts had by the responder and any unrest felt is allayed by the repetition of “even if”.

The absence of these fears lets the responder act, open the door that obstructs the way to the outside world and in such a way change their world. The persuasive, emotive references to worldly sights that are usually taken for granted make the scene seem innocent and non-threatening and efficaciously capture the intonations of the spoken voice while again with success impelling the responder to capture the impulse to change. The unregulated structure united with simple terminology destroys the obstacles to action, soothing and calming the anxieties felt by the responder, emphasizing that change is only apparent after a person decides to take part in an activity or thought that initiates the message of fear and change. “The Door” analyzes the idea of controlling change and its alterations that form our understanding of ourselves and the world.
